Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Art Museum Manager and Curator, assists with museum educational programs and activities related to humanities-based cultural art history school tours and other classes for primarily children throughout the year. Independently performs a wide variety of responsible and confidential duties in support of the education programs. 

 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1.            Assists in the coordination of youth educational programs

2.            Coordinates school tours with Washington County School District personnel

3.            Assists in the development of new educational programs

4.            Assists in the promotion of education programs

5.            Works with volunteer docents

6.            Participates as a member of the Education Committee

7.            Coordinates education programs with exhibits

8.            Oversees the Family Discovery Center

9.            Collaborates/teaches Summer Culture Classes

10.        Coordinates/collaborates smART Saturday

11.        Provides support for front desk and docent-led school tours of the museum

12.        Provides schools with information prior to their visit

13.        Performs other related duties as required

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.  Risk of bodily injury is light under normal conditions. Normal office environment. Pleasant working conditions with little or no exposure to hazards. Frequent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior, human error, work deadlines, and the demands of multiple projects.

 

Note:  Working hours vary depending on programs, generally 28 hours a week, Monday-Thursday, but requires some evenings and weekends. Must also be available to work additional hours during exhibit installations and special events. 


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications Must be over 18 years of age

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree in art history, art education, fine art, visual art, museum studies, history, or closely related field preferred.  Courses should include emphasis in art education, art history, museum studies, visual arts, fine art. While an arts related internship or practicum is highly desirable, other education may be substituted.  Bachelor’s Degree in Art History preferred.

Experience: Experience in a public or educational setting preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications:  Must possess a valid driver license.  A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge:

·               Personal computers, primarily all Google, & Windows programs including (Excel) spreadsheets.

·               Modern office terminology and procedures, telephone techniques, and time management skills

·               Human relations, communication, and organizational skills

·               Art, art museums and art history

·               Computer and computer programs/software

·               Social media

·               Customer service, problem solving, and effective, active listening

·               Cash register/credit card machine usage

Skills:

·               Educational programming methods and techniques

·               Community needs and problems related to organized arts recreation for children and adults

·               Museum practices and methods including proper methods of handling a variety of artwork and educational and teaching activities

·               High level ability to organize needs of both the Family Discovery Center and the classroom

Ability to:

·               Communicate orally in the English language on a one-on-one or group setting basis

·               Contribute to overall success of the museum

·               Teach art history

·               Create exhibit specific programs for children

·               Perform a variety of art museum functions

·               Be tactful and courteous with the public

·               Maintain effective working and cooperative relations with others

·               Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others

·               Serve the public at times at the museum front desk

·               Work with volunteers including ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed

·               Multitask and pay close attention to detail

·               Learn and operate museum specific software

·               Establish work priorities
