Park Planner Starting Salary: 30 ($54,670/year)

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $68,337/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2021.

New hires also receive 2 weeks of vacation time during their first year of employment, one of which is available to the employee the first day of employment. Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy Director-Park Planning, performs landscape architectural tasks necessary to implement the design and development of parks, trails and recreational facilities for the City of St. George.  Responsibilities include analyzing data; producing plans, reports, sketches, models, photographs, land-use studies, cost estimates; and assisting with monitoring contractor performance and preparing field reports.

 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class).

1.            Assists in planning for parks, trails, and other recreation and natural resources, and assists with park improvement plans.

2.            Conducts field work and special investigations for data gathering, and assists in researching and coordinating data and plans with departments, divisions, committees, boards, organizations, commissions, public agencies, engineers, architects, landscape architects, and other design/planning professionals.

3.            Assists in the preparation of project construction plans, construction contract documents, reports, grants, bid specifications, and quotes.

4.            Prepares maps, sketches, drawings, photographs, and other graphic materials.

5.            Assists in presentations to public, committees, boards, organizations, commissions, and City Council; assists in the preparation of such meetings; and assists in communicating plans, design specifications, and practices to neighborhood groups, news media, and the public.

6.            Obtains bids and quotes related to project development.

7.            Assists in the assessment of plans and construction documents, and assists in the development of design specifications, standards, and plan review criteria.

8.            Assists in the administration and monitoring of contracts, assists in inspecting project sites during construction, and assists in monitoring contractor performance.

9.            Performs other related duties as required.

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

 

The position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and driving as well as moderate physical activity.  May push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.  The position requires the ability to work under pressure of established deadlines and the individual may be exposed to stress as a result of human behavior.  The position requires the ability to work extended hours when necessary.  Candidates must be self-motivation, demonstrate initiative, and self-confidence.  Work conducted in both an outdoor setting and an office environment.  Must be able and willing to work in extreme hot or cold weather and be exposed to disagreeable environmental elements.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, urban planning, geography, or a related field.

Experience:  Minimum of one (1) year full time professional level experience in park planning, planning, landscape architecture, project management, or other related field.

Licenses and/or Certification:

•         Must possess a valid driver license.  A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

•         A State of Utah Landscape Architect license or the ability to become licensed within six (6) months from initial employment and be maintained throughout employment period.  Applicants licensed out of state must obtain a State of Utah license within six (6) months of initial employment. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

•         Design principles and practices for public parks, trails and recreation facilities and municipal planning.

•         Materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in park construction and maintenance.

•         Principles and practices related to project management, construction management and administration.

•         Knowledgeable and efficient in landscape and irrigation design and construction drawing preparations.

•         Specific knowledge and experience with Southern Utah’s plant pallet, soils types, and environmental characteristics will be an advantage.

•         City policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to municipal operations.

Skills:

•         Possess excellent organization, communication, and analytical skills to interact with staff, management, and the public.

Ability to:

•         Read, write, and communicate at a professional level in English.

•         Use office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, and fax machines.

•         Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

•         Analyze problems, identify solutions, and demonstrate the ability to provide critical thinking skills as it relates to design and project management.

•         Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, creative, and follow a schedule.

•         Analyze and prepare documents pertaining to complex issues in written, oral, and graphic form.

•         Operate a variety of computer hardware and software pertaining to park planning.  These include AutoCAD, Photoshop /Adobe CS6, and Microsoft Office Programs.

•         Prepare and update cost estimates using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.

 

•         Work and function within a team environment.
