Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy Director - Dixie Center, performs a variety of custodial functions at the Dixie Center for the City of St. George.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1. Performs general custodial responsibilities at the Dixie Center based on needs of the building, including but not limited to: cleans, sanitizes, and deodorizes rest rooms; sweeps and vacuums carpeting and floors using manual and power equipment; mops and waxes floors; empties waste cans and other trash receptacles, both during and after events; cleans woodwork, walls, and windows using common cleaning equipment and products; sweeps sidewalks and entrances; cleans and dusts furniture; and replaces light bulbs.

2. Moves office and building furniture and equipment.

3. Operates motorized equipment such as riding vacuum, hand vacuum, floor scrubber, burnisher, shampooer, forklift, scissor lift, etc.

4. Keeps equipment and supplies in order and requests re-supply when needed from the Deputy Director – Dixie Center.

5. May order supplies.

6. Under the direction of Dixie Center Maintenance Supervisor, may train, assign work duties, and monitor performance of part-time Dixie Center Custodian I employees.

7. Assists in maintaining security of the Dixie Center by locking and unlocking the building according to pre-scheduled event roster and completes regular security checks of facilities.

8. Assists with minor maintenance, repairs, and adjustments, including changing filters and light bulbs and adjusting toilets, faucets, and HVAC temperatures. Where needed, makes suggestions for repairs, alterations, changes, and improvements to the facility and for equipment to maintain the facility.

9. May assist in the set up/take down for scheduled functions at the Dixie Center, i.e., sets up chairs and tables and inspects for safety hazards and corrects any problems.

10. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching, and bending. Low exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, noise, dust, and fumes. Low risk of bodily injury under normal conditions. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note: Often works irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Emergency call-back may be required in this position.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Licenses and/or Certifications:

Custodian I:

• Entry level. No experience or high school diploma required.

• CPR and First Aid certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

• All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.

• Must obtain forklift and scissor lift certifications within six months of hire.

Custodian II: Career progression. Employee moves to Custodian II when the following requirements have been met:

• Possess and maintain all applicable and valid licenses and certifications required for Custodian I.

• Minimum of two (2) years full time experience as a building custodian; successful completion of the new hire probation period.

• CMI Custodial Technician (Basic) certification.

• All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position or demotion to Custodian I.

Custodian III: Career Progression. Employee moves to Custodian III when the following requirements have been met:

• Possess and maintain all applicable and valid licenses and certifications required for Custodian I and II.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Minimum of four (4) years full time experience as a building custodian.

• CMI Custodial Technician (Advanced) certification.

• All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position or demotion to Custodian I or II.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• A variety of cleaning supplies, cleaning fluids, chemicals, and similar solutions.

• Safety hazards involved in building maintenance activities.

Skills in:

• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees and those contacted in the scope of work.

Ability to:

• Operate, use, and care for a variety of building maintenance equipment sweepers, wet and dry vacuum cleaners, mop wringers, brooms, mops, waxes, and other cleaning materials and equipment.

• Perform indoor and outdoor manual labor.
