Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor of Youth Programs, performs various tasks as

necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community. Specifically responsible for youth programs for youth ages 3-18. During programs, the Lead Worker assists in the planning and implementa-tion of various youth programs, including camps and afterschool programs, along with providing supervision of youth participants.

1. Provide customer service in person and over the phone; answering questions and/or referring customers to appro-priate staff members.

2. Responds to public inquiries providing accurate information regarding recreation programs and services.

3. Registers participants for programs, classes and activities

4. General office and clerical duties

5. Copies and prepares various brochures, flyers, schedules, rosters, etc. for distribution.

6. Organizes, cleans, prepares and maintains recreation facilities and other work areas

7. Works programs and special events

8. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed

9. Follow all city policies and procedures

10. Aids in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events and ensures that the mission and program policy are known to all participants.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies.

Requires moderately heavy physical activity exerting 25-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Mental demands of intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note: Youth Programs: Must be available to be on site during programs, typically weekday afternoons dur-ing August-May. Summer program hours vary throughout the week. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education: None required. All applicants must be 17 years of age or older.

Preference given to those with education in recreation or a related field.

Experience:

• Customer service experience preferred

• Personal and/or professional experience coordinating, programming and leading youth and/or family-oriented rec-reation activities preferred

• Experience working with youth preferred

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• CPR, First Aid, AED certification required. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.

• Utah Food Handlers Permit preferred but not required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• General knowledge of recreation and leisure activities and programming practices preferred

Skills:

• Highly motivated

• Computer literate

• Interpersonal skills among City officials, community leaders, volunteers and fellow staff

Ability to:

• Help recruit, train, and organize volunteers.

• Interact with sponsors and community partners

• Work in a broad range of assignments with limited to no training.

• Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the activities and personnel involved in recreation programs, events, classes, or facilities.

• Plan and exercise judgment in new or constantly changing problems and situations.

• Show good judgment in preventing injuries and responding to recreation related injuries based on an understanding of risk management.

• Establish good community relations.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, city officials, civic organizations and the public.
