Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline, and various other types of vehicles and specialized related equipment. This is mechanical work for the City of St. George.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. 1. Performs mechanical work in repair and maintenance, including fire apparatus and police, water, power, sewer, and street maintenance equipment.

2. Repairs and services automobiles and light trucks, electronic ignitions, brakes, clutches, diesel engines, and transmissions.

3. Performs engine adjustments or replaces defective parts as required.

4. Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding. Fabricates specialized equipment. Lays out, cuts, and fits material for welding.

5. Performs annual vehicle inspections.

6. Maintains standard shop records such as labor time, completed repairs, and parts and materials used for work orders.

7. Diagnoses equipment malfunctions to determine the most effective and economical means of repair. Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, decides what repairs will be made and completes all required work to achieve proper vehicle performance.

8. Performs preventive maintenance for all City equipment and vehicles such as lubrication, oil change, and minor repairs as needed.

9. Understands, diagnoses, and repairs multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.

10. Performs other related duties as required.

11. Ability to read wiring diagrams.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Work performed in an automotive repair shop environment. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights exerting up to 40-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Bends, stretches, twists, or reaches with body, arms, and/or legs. Detects or tells the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Moves hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Quickly and repeatedly adjusts the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Makes precisely coordinated movements of fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects. Matches or detects differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Stands, walks, or sits uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather. Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. Exposure to conditions, such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes, and the skin. Exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note: Employees in this classification:

• Must supply own hand tools and rollaway to perform duties as required.

• Steel toe boots are required.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education: Vocational training, apprentice training program, or recent experience in the automotive field. Training in mechanical repair of gasoline or diesel engines and light pickups. Recent vocational training, or experience in the operation, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex computer systems with current technology of passenger vehicles and light pickups.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• Must possess a valid Utah driver’s license. A valid Utah driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Machines and tools, including their designs, and uses in repair, and maintenance.

• Oxyacetylene and electronic welding.

• Electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems; pumps; gas, natural gas, and diesel engines; cooling systems; up-fit wiring; and transmissions.

• OBDII system and CAN system.

• Multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.

• Diagnosis of complex computers and their communication processes.

Skills in:

• Repairing City equipment using the needed tools.

• Determining causes of operating errors and deciding proper action to correct errors.

• Determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed in performing routine maintenance on equipment.

• Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.

• Basic use of computers including proficiency in typing detailed notes.

• Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

• Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Ability to:

• Learn to read, diagnose, and comprehend diagnostic tools using OBDII technology, including programmable logic systems, and install and repair such systems.

• Learn to tune engines using sophisticated computer testing equipment.

• Wire and/or repair any components in an electrical system.

• Safely operate all City equipment, i.e., emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, etc.

• Operate a laptop/diagnostic computer.

• Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor evaluate vehicle safety needs to ensure reliable vehicle performance.

• Perform annual inspections.

• Understand and comply with all OSHA regulations.

• Read and write in English at a business level.
