Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, performs semi-skilled duties for the City of St. George related to the general and preventive maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities, furnishings, and equipment.

 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1.      Receives and completes departmental requests for repairs, replacements, and mechanical system adjustments.

2.      Performs general and preventive maintenance and repairs related to routine plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical functions of City buildings and environs.  Maintains required records.

3.      Reviews plans and makes recommendations on City facility remodeling and new construction projects as needed.

4.      Identifies the need for and recommends repair or alteration of City owned facilities.

5.      Assists with set up and take down for special events such as the St. George Marathon.

6.      Performs other related duties as required.

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.  Moderate physical activity exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently.  Uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching, and bending.  Exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease.  Risk of bodily injury is moderate under normal conditions.  May have disagreeable elements such as appearance of work place, poor ventilation, or uneven temperatures.  Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions.  Some exposure to hazardous materials such as fumes, pesticides, cleaning agents, etc. and to high levels of noise.  Exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. 

 

Note:   Requires working extended or irregular hours such as weekends, nights, and holidays. Must be available for on-call rotation and be able to respond within thirty minutes.

 

 


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Maintenance Technician I

Experience: Minimum of one (1) year full time paid experience in building maintenance.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Maintenance Technician II

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years full time paid experience in building maintenance.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

         Tools, equipment, and techniques used in maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings.

         Basics of reading and understanding blueprints.

         Standard safety precautions.

Skills in:

         Performing routine building maintenance.

         Determining the kinds of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

         Operation of a variety of hand tools and equipment common to the building trades.

Ability to

         Understand and follow general work instructions.

         Work within budgetary and time allocations.

         Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

         Analyze and solve problems under stress.

         Read blueprints, electrical schematics, and various operational and maintenance manuals.

         Perform indoor and outdoor manual labor for extended periods of time.

         Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
