Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of a City of St. George Recreation Supervisor, assists in developing and managing various programs, events, and/or facility operations; assists with the development, interpretation, training, and enforcement of division policies and practices; provides suggestions to improve the overall program; assist with overseeing part-time staff; and helps develops short-range goals and plans.

1.            Provides leadership by taking charge of specific parts of an assigned program, event, or facility operation. 

2.            Schedules employees and/or contractors, volunteer groups, and vendors.

3.            Assists in interviewing potential staff employees. 

4.            Assists in providing feedback and evaluation to the Recreation Supervisor for employees and contractors who work under their direction at events, programs, or facilities.

5.            Handles minor employee issues when Recreation Supervisor is not on duty or at that specific site and then reports back to supervisor.

6.            Assists the Recreation Supervisor with planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and helps to maintain relationships with program contractors.

7.            Manages inventory controls and oversees the proper use, safety, and security of all supplies, and makes requests to the Recreation Supervisor for purchase of equipment needed.

8.            Assists the Recreation Supervisor in budgetary process and cost control during events, programs, or facilities.

9.            Performs money handling duties and implements city policies and procedures on proper money handling.

10.        Works with the Recreation Supervisor to advertise the programs and sign-up dates and ensures that the mission and program policy are known to all participants.

 

Essential Functions – Sports Specialist

11.        Assists in writing league and tournament schedules or double checks that they are correct. 

12.        Assists in recruiting youth sports coaches and helps ensure that they have background checks

13.        Assists with on-site supervision of games and events; officiate games as needed.

14.        Assists in assembling and distributing team packets. 

15.        Completes reports; assists in the training of staff.

16.        Assists in the office or at the facilities to put on sports programming

17.        Performs other related duties as required.

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions vary depending on the assignment.  May work both indoor and outdoor during recreation events in varied temperatures and weather conditions.  Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies and must be able to respond to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.  Moderately heavy physical activity exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently.  Moderate exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

 

Note:   Must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays and other schedules to help prepare for recreation offerings.  This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 30 hours per week over a period of twelve months.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent.  Degree in recreation or related field or some secondary education toward such a degree preferred.

Experience:  Recreation related experience required. Supervisory experience preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications: 

•         CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications must be obtained within sixty (60) days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

•         Must possess a valid driver license.  A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

•         Program common practices. 

•         Computers and computer programs.

Skills:

•         Skill in working with people of all ages.

•         Technical skills related to the area assigned.

•         Interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to:

•         Work in a broad range of assignments with limited to no training. 

•         Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the activities and personnel involved in recreation programs, events, classes, or facilities.

•         Plan and exercise judgment in new or constantly changing problems and situations.

•         Show good judgment in preventing injuries and responding to recreation related injuries based on an understanding of risk management.

•         Establish good community relations.

•         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, city officials, civic organizations, and the public.
