Job Description

Salary Range

Art Museum Manager and Curator Starting Salary: 48 ($48,320/year)

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $72,480/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2018.

 

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Community Arts Manager, performs general supervisory and professional duties as needed to direct the operation of the City of St. George Art Museum, and associated events. Supervises staff and oversees museum operations, exhibition planning, collections management, fundraising, and budget development and implementation.

 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1.            Develops and manages budget, including exhibits budget, for the operation of the Art Museum and Pioneer Center for the Arts

2.            Oversees day-to-day operations of Art Museum, including security, maintenance, exhibits, customer service, programming, etc.

3.            Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers.

4.            Researches, prepares, administers grants, and other fundraising and development efforts.

5.            Serves as staff to Museum Advisory Board and attends Arts Commission meetings as needed.

6.            Represents Art Museum at meetings of state and national associations.

7.            Performs functions of Curator, i.e., research, negotiation, design, gallery preparation, installation, advertising, promotion, insurance, security, recordkeeping, receiving, and shipping.  Schedules approximately 16 shows per year and plans for two years of exhibitions.

8.            Plans and produces exhibit openings, lectures, docent education, and related materials.

9.            Maintains permanent collection, i.e., inventory, accession and de-accession, interoffice loan program, etc.

10.        Assists with production of St. George Art Festival, St. George Marathon, and other City sponsored special events.

11.        Responsible for programs and exhibits at the Art Museum facilities as needed.

12.        Performs other related duties as assigned.

13.        Collaborate with other art museums, galleries and organizations.

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity; exerts up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.  Risk of bodily injury is light under normal conditions. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor degree from an accredited institution with a major in museum studies, fine arts, art history, or closely related field.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years full time professional level museum curatorial experience which includes administrative, budgetary, and staff or volunteer supervisory experience.

Licenses and/or Certifications:  Possess a valid driver license.  A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge of:

•         General supervision principles and practices.

•         Facility management and oversight, including resources and administration.

•         Budget strategy, preparation, and management.

•         Supervision and management of personnel-staff and volunteers.

•         Acquisitions and collections management, including legal and ethical issues of collections management.

•         Techniques of selection, evaluation, preservation, restoration, and exhibition of art work.

•         Methods and practices used to plan, organize, and direct specialized art exhibitions, including promoting, publicizing, and scheduling of events, activities, materials, and facilities.

•         Community needs and problems related to organized arts recreation for children and adults.

•         Educational programs and program development.

•         Funding sources and grant writing.

•         Computer and computer programs.

Ability to:

•         Organize and construct special events, exhibits, and displays.

•         Prepare and present budget estimates.

•         Be a team player and able to fit into the organization and get along with others.

•         Motivated to develop Arts to the community and experience positive, personal growth.

•         Communicate verbally and in writing in a proficient manner.

•         Establish and maintain effective working relations with those contacted in scope of work, e.g., community groups, advisory boards, private/public partnerships, etc.
