Job Description

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager and Recreation Specialist, supervises the lifeguards and facility while on duty and performs a variety of head lifeguard functions at either or both of the City of St. George public swimming pools.  Provides accurate information regarding facilities and recreation services.

 

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1. Ensures the safety of staff and patrons at all times.  

2. Keeps staff on task with job duties.  

3. Closes and opens cash tills and performs shift register count-outs.  

4. Conducts/Attends monthly meetings with management and staff.

5. Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.

6. Enforces facility rules and regulations.

7. Recognizes and responds calmly, quickly and effectively to all emergencies, to your level of training.

8. Oversees Emergency Action Plans.

9. Administers first aid, ventilations, and CPR using rescue equipment.

10. Alerts, in a safe manner, other lifeguards and facility staff and management when more help or rescue equipment is needed.

11. Works special events as assigned.

12. Completes required records and reports and submits them to management.

13. Performs maintenance or other tasks assigned by supervisors.

14. Inspects the facility daily and reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisor.

15. Checks patrons into Aquatic Facilities and registers participants for classes and activities.  Performs money handling duties according to city and division policies and procedures.

16. Promotes pass sales by informing patrons of pass options.

17. May be required to work other positions at the facilities that you are qualified to work.

18. Handles minor employee and patron issues when supervisors are not on duty or at that specific site and then reports back to supervisor.

19. Checks vehicles each night to ensure cleanliness and security.

20. Performs other related duties as required.

21. Wears appropriate uniform during assigned shift.

 

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Moderately heavy physical activity required to push, pull, or lift 20-60 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently.  Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes.  Moderate risk of bodily injury under normal conditions.  Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

 

Note:  Often works irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.  Emergency call-back may be required in this position. Individuals in this position must wear suitable attire, which for females mandates an athletic one piece suit, for males mandates suitable swim trunks. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging 28 or less hours per week over a period of twelve months.

 


Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Licenses and/or Certifications:  

• American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding and Professional Rescuer First Aid/CPR/AED.

• American Red Cross certification in Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

• Must possess a valid driver license.  A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Facilities’ rules and regulations.

• Pool and facility maintenance.

• Facilities’ Emergency Action Plan.

• Using Spreadsheets, Word Documents, and G Suite.

 

Skills:

• Customer service oriented and excellent public relations skills.

• Administering first aid, ventilations, and CPR using rescue equipment.

• Perform all American Red Cross Lifeguard rescues and skills.

 

Ability to:

• Show professionalism at all times.

• Report and discuss all safety, facility, and staff issues with supervisor.  

• Perform maintenance or other tasks assigned by management.

• Close and open cash tills and perform shift register count-outs.

• Respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies, situations, and behaviors.

• Knowledge of/skills in using computer spreadsheets/documents.

• Be courteous to fellow employees and patrons.

• Open and close the facilities each day.
